Recon Role Guide

Sniper & Scouting

Marksman and sniper rifles for long-range picks and Control Zone intel — everything from the budget Scout Rifle TD ($1,100) up to the AMR 50 ($8,800), an anti-materiel monster with 2,000m effective range. High reward for good positioning, high cost if you get caught out of position with a slow-firing rifle in hand.

Recon Unlock Progression

Levels are within the Recon tree, not your overall WARDOGS account level. Sourced from early-access and beta gameplay — verify against the latest patch notes if you're mid-season, since Bulkhead tunes unlock costs and levels per patch.

Lv.0

Binoculars / Rangefinder

~$37–75 depending on discounts. Cheap, low-weight, and useful for XP even before you have a real sniper — see the AA-spotting tactic below.

Lv.0

Scout Rifle TD

The starter sniper. Near-universally panned — doesn't even one-shot an unarmored target, and reloads after every round. Consensus advice: don't grind Recon seriously until you have the SKS, or level it by looting dead snipers' weapons instead.

Lv.5

SKS

Big power spike once bipodded — deploying the bipod removes almost all of its recoil.

Lv.10

Mosin Nagant

The first sniper that reliably one-taps an unarmored headshot. High pickup priority.

Lv.10

SV98

Functionally the same rifle as the Mosin with a different magazine size — skippable if magazine capacity doesn't matter to you.

Lv.12

SVD

Lv.17

Bow

No attachment slots and can't be zeroed for range, but does full damage with zero falloff at any distance and can one-shot Tier-1-armor targets anywhere on the body. Flagged as a strong pick specifically in the opening week of a season, when server-average armor is still low.

Lv.22

Claymore

Anti-personnel mine — useful for automating rear security while you hold a sniping position.

Lv.24

Ghillie Suit

~$140,000 of Recon XP to unlock, ~$5,500 to buy each life — blocks kill cams. See the twink-buying tip below for a cheaper path in.

Lv.25

MK22

Lv.30

BMR-308

Lv.35

AMR 50 (.50 Cal)

The apex Recon weapon — one-shots headshots through heavy armor and two-shots bodies even against max armor.

What Players Are Saying

Community consensus from current early-access play — a read on the present patch, not a permanent tier list. Expect this to shift after balance passes.

Skip or minimize time on the Scout Rifle TD — it's the one nearly every player agrees is bad. The SKS at Lv.5 is the real starting point for the tree.

The Bow is a genuine early-season pick, not a novelty: with armor still low across most of the server in the first week or two, its zero-falloff, one-shot-vs-Tier-1-armor damage profile competes with actual sniper rifles. It falls off in value as the average armor tier rises later in a season.

Making Money as Recon

Role-specific tactics — for the full cross-role money-making guide, see How the WARDOGS Economy Works.

  • Sit near a teammate firing anti-air rockets at an enemy helicopter and keep it "scanned" with your binoculars right before it goes down — you get a real share of the shooter's XP/cash reward for a near-zero-cost item.
  • Rather than grinding the full ~$140,000 XP unlock for the Ghillie Suit yourself, buy it directly from a higher-level teammate through the spawn ammo-box trade system — commonly costs roughly the buy price plus a small markup (~$7,000 total) instead of the full grind.
